Treat Your Thought As A Switch

Thoughts flash into your mind every instant. Some are uplifting, some depressing and some have no sense or meaning attached to it.

What is required to be successful and have a happy life? What is the difference between saints and normal people? Why most of the initial ones contended while the latter ones stressed out and burnt out in many cases. Don’t they have problems that we don’t have?

Concentration, abstinence is a big challenge for them as compared with the challenges we face in our daily lives. It is not much of a difference.

It is the thought process. Ask yourself whenever you get a negative thought (upsetting, blaming, jealous thoughts), what do you do? Most of the time, you either blame yourself, blame others go on self fulfilling prophecy and what you fear / dread becomes true!

Is this fruitful? Regardless if it is good or bad, said and done, you have to face the situation at the end of the day. The person who clears the mess is the person who initially either accepted the issue at hand or denied it.

How do u handle this. To start with, treat the vibe (thought) you get like a switch. When you have a negative incident, negative thought - don’t fight it - accept it and turn it off with positive ones.

Switch off the negative thoughts and switch on the positive ones. BE REALISTIC THOUGH.

The positive ones are the thoughts you believe in. The thoughts/ beliefs you live by.

Not some wishful thinking or just wondering like ‘oh my universe/god! I think positive, you save me.’ You are going to be let down. You got to believe it. You got to say, ‘No matter what the outcome will be, I have the ability to come out of this and I will do it.’

I will give you two examples. I am running a project for a health services company. I am very passionate about this as I will be able to contribute something positive to society on its completion. Currently, due to work obligations, my hands are full. I am tired and cursing myself for taking this up. I can’t think on the write up I am supposed to give this company.

This vibe/thought goes on for 1 hour and I feel down in dumps. On one side, the brain tells me, ‘You got to start something’. But, on another side, my unreasonable mind tells me ‘Damn, I don’t have time, I don’t deserve this… blah blah’.

I asked myself which I believe in most.

Suddenly a thought flashes in the mind. As what T. Harv Eker (author of Millionaire Mind) said, ‘you make sure reality, whether it’s good or bad". I asked myself, ‘What if this task is already completed, how would I feel? What would it be if I can get this project running? My long term goal in life is accomplished! What more would I want?’

I pulled up a notepad and scribbled down ideas to do to get me out of this mess. Split the tasks into action items. In 15 minutes, there is some fruitful direction shaping up. I called up a friend and asked for help. We spent the next 4 hours strategizing. In the next few minutes, I have a call with the company and I must say I am well prepared.

How did I achieve this? It’s due to a 1 minute positive thinking backed by solid belief. Therefore, switch off the negative thoughts and switch on positive ones.

The second incident I believe you can relate to is when you are stuck in a traffic jam. I got stuck near Pantai Dalam on Thursday, Mar 6th 2008, because of some election rally for 50 minutes. Instead of cursing and swearing (which I did for a little over 1 min), I thought of using the “Switch thoughts “concept. I started to pause and think of what needs to done when I reach home, what I haven’t done for past 1 week or month due to lack of time. What would make me proud with a sense of achievement and peacefulness. I have identified, at that particular instance, so many things that had been neglected and what could be done to speed up the current process. Once I got home, straightaway I got into the work and cleared some tasks, which I was not able to a few days ago.

I am striving to apply this concept now for almost everything and can see results every time so far. End result is amazing. The feeling of helplessness was replaced with confidence and expectation.

Remember to treat your thoughts like a switch. The depressing ones, switch them off and replace with the promising, uplifting thoughts which you “believe” in.
